Well, it’s almost Valentine’s Day and I think we all know what that means… chocolate! Also, the Girl Scouts have hit the streets and that means cookies are on the way. I don’t know about you, but I love Girl Scout Cookies. This means we need to take a preemptive strike and work out even harder this month! See you in class!

Hello everyone! I just wanted to give you a head’s up for classes that will have subs in the next week. Both classes this Saturday morning at Greenbriar will have subs (Stacey House will be subbing Yoga and the Pilates sub should be on the schedule online). Also, you will have a sub for Pilates next Thursday night at Post Oak. Again, the sub should be on the schedule online. See you again next week!
UPDATE: You will have a sub again at Post Oak next Thursday, 1/22/09 for Pilates from 7:15-8:15. Sorry to miss two weeks in a row but I have a meeting that evening! See you on the 29th!

The holiday season is here and with that always comes a busy schedule! Well, I’m here to tell you that this Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, 24 Hour Fitness group classes are cancelled at the Post Oak location. The club may be closed altogether so I would definitely call before trying to stop in for a work out. Have a fabulous Thanksgiving and be careful on the roads if you’re traveling. I’ll see you back in the gym next week!

If you’re in Houston on Labor Day you’re in luck! This Monday, September 1, 2008 the Yoga Teacher’s Association of Houston is sponsoring (with Luke’s Locker) a free day of yoga in Houston. Studios around town are opening their doors for FREE! This is a great opportunity to try out different studios and different types of yoga that you may have been curious about. The whole day gets kicked off Monday Morning with a “city-wide sun salutation” at Discovery Green Park downtown from 9-11am. Well… anywhere you have a computer that is. My great friend Krissy emailed me the other day telling me about this great website she found. She told me that she had just closed her office door and taken a thirty minute yoga class in her office during her lunch break. How did she do this, you ask? Yoga Today offers, as it states on their website, Free Yoga Delivered Daily. Every day they have a different video session for you to watch and follow along with. I haven’t tried it yet but I am definitely planning on it. While we always have the best of intentions to get to the gym sometimes it just doesn’t happen. If you’re ever having one of those days, this could definitely be a great alternative for you. www.YogaToday.com

While yoga offers countless benefits, one I appreciate the most is how it helps me sleep. Since I’ve been practicing yoga, I sleep so much more soundly. I used to toss and turn and wake up throughout the night but I rarely do that these days and I attribute a lot of that to my yoga practice. I think that it just helps me stay more relaxed in general which in turn helps me sleep better. I’m still super sleepy when I wake up in the mornings but at least I’m sleeping at night. Burn Baby Burn!
Ever wonder how many calories you burn during class? Frankly I wonder how many calories I burn doing anything. That’s why the Bodybugg was so awesome. I miss that little bugg sometimes. Anyway, back to the point… it’s difficult for me to tell you how many calories you burn in class because it can vary so much from person to person. Depending on how much you weigh and how intensely you participate in class, the numbers can be all over the board. I found a nifty little calorie calculator online that I wanted to share with you all. It’s from the Self Magazine website. Check it out here! You can change the activity to see what you burn during pilates, yoga or running or whatever else it is that you do.
It gives you the option to choose between Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. For purposes of calculating calories for my classes most of you would be safe choosing Intermediate. Obviously some portions of class are harder than others and some people work harder than others but I would say that it averages out to be an intermediate class when it comes to calorie burn. This may not be dead on but it will at least give you some sort of an idea! See you in class! Have a great weekend!
